Carnival Crash – It Is A Happy Man – Obelisk Records 2020

Prominenz in Opulenz also.

Carnival Crash — It Is A Happy Man — Obelisk Records 2020

by Matthias Bosenick (08.10.2020)

“It Is A Happy Man” dives deeply into the history of the New York underground of the early eighties: this CD bundles the largely unreleased recordings of the band Carnival Crash, which have arisen in the creative process triggered by punk and post punk and give an idea of where the journey would lead the four afterwards prominent musicians – Swans, Ritual Tension, Chavez and Live Skull, for a start. The seven songs clearly reflect the style of that time and that place and are yet surprisingly timeless. And great!

The work of polishing up the seven tracks was accomplished by singer and drummer Ivan Nahem, as well as his brother Andrew, and Michael Jung of Alice Donut, and one can only be amazed how well it has succeeded; traces of time, wear and tear or even the amateurish are absolutely imperceptible. The album sounds so fresh, as if it had just been recorded – however, the recordings were made in 1981 and 1982. The four protagonists Ivan Nahem, Norman Westberg, John Griffin and James Lo were playing in the tri-border region of Punk, Post Punk and what was to come, including Noise Rock, No Wave, Industrial and Indie Rock.

Raw, rough, impetuous, urgent and brittle is the music, yet subtly composed and played with skill. The sound is chill, and yet there are grooves in it, and even without ostensible catchiness, Carnival Crash create melodies that you absolutely want to hear again; this does not necessarily happen through the singing, because it is not tied to fixed, at worst familiar lines; the guitar does not generate permanent soundscapes either, but rather sets distinctive accents, and the bass often remains as a supporting and driving element with a high degree of recognition. The responsibility for experimental fills and special features inserted into the songs finally rests with all four of them.

Forty years ago, a large gene pool of specific sounds developed in New York, and Carnival Crash tried themselves amidst all these offered opportunities, far more promising than the non-publication of the recorded songs would lead to fear (apart from the fact that Nahem released „Tell Tale Heart“ and „Edge Of Night“ in 1983 under the alias Ivan X as a 7″). CBGBs was a nucleus for experimental rock music, No Wave let its misshapen tendrils proliferate, people like Frank Zappa already had an influence on absurd compositional ideas for a long time. In Europe, bands and musicians thought punk further as well; to be heard on demos and debuts from for example U2, The Cure or Boys Next Door that appeared around the same time. Carnival Crash started exactly there – and paved the way for new directions that the four took after the split.

Singer and drummer Ivan Nahem, for example, temporarily sat on the drums with Michael Gira’s Swans and deepened the idea of No Wave with Ritual Tension, whose comeback album after a 30-year break is freshly released. Guitarist Norman Westberg entirely stayed with the monotonously noiserocking Swans, at least until 2016; further stations for him were among others Sulfur, The Heroine Sheiks, Scarcity Of Tanks and Sugartime, as well as his solo work. James Lo, who joined the band for the second session, later drummed with the Noisecore band Live Skull and the alternative rockers Chavez. Even John Griffin did not give up making music, not in fixed formations though, he shifted more to painting. On “Edge Of Night”, Tom Paine played bass, while continuing with Live Skull along with Lo, among others.

Prominence in opulence, if you like. “It Is A Happy Man” is more than just a contemporary document, the short album works very well on its own, even today. A sounding history book and a terrific, unadjusted rock’n’roll experiment. Ultimately, one can only be grateful to the label for having the courage to make this document available to everyone!
